Come and watch contemporary Israeli and Palestinian films and learn about the Middle East. The last decades have marked the growing worldwide interest in Israeli cinema. Films such as Footnote, Yossi and Jagger, Beaufort, and Waltz with Bashir have been commercially and critically successful and have won a number of prestigious international awards. The course will explore the history, culture and politics of the Israeli-Arab conflict and the Middle East by critically viewing contemporary Israeli films. A different collection of films will be shown.

Student Feedback

This course has given me a great insight into the issues facing real-life Israelis today. Film is a powerful medium for communicating ideas and feelings, especially when the background issues are explained by a teacher who is obviously knowledgeable in his subject. The participants in the course were from diverse backgrounds, both Jewish and non-Jewish. The discussions following the films were both lively and enjoyable, and provided many further insights. I highly recommend "Israel through film".
